Scientific Editing Vacancies

Part- and Full-Time

We are an English language support service for senior academics in all scientific areas, including engineering, mathematics, medicine, economics, the physical and biological sciences and the social sciences. We offer scientific editing vacancies to candidates with knowledge and experience in one or more of these fields of study.

Vacancy Description

Remote – Part-Time or Full-Time Position

We currently have scientific editing vacancies available for experienced editors to edit scholarly articles submitted to scientific journals.

All editing is done on our editors’ own computers using the electronic documents submitted by our clients, so our scientific editing vacancies offer a fabulous opportunity for those who love to learn as they supplement their income from home. We assign individual editing tasks to members of our team according to their areas of expertise and availability, and they return the edited documents by the requested deadline. Part-time university instructors, degree-holding parents with time to spare amidst the demands of childcare, retired scientists who wish to keep up with the latest developments in their fields and many others will find editing scientific documents a perfect fit.

Remuneration

The rates of pay start at £6 ($8.50 USD) per 1,000 words, and a FREE scientific editing course is provided.

All transactions between PRS and scientific editors are carried out electronically via email: PRS sends the editor an article (usually in Microsoft Word) via email, and the scientific editor returns the edited version in the same manner within a set amount of time.

Qualifications

Candidates for our scientific editing vacancies must be native speakers of English and extremely proficient in the English language. Many of our clients are scientists and professors who write and publish their research in English, although they are not native speakers of the language. Our goal is to help them report their research clearly and accurately in documents of the highest professional quality by correcting errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation and improving awkward vocabulary and phrasing, so a solid command of the English language is necessary to do the vacancy well.

A master’s degree in one or more scientific areas is a basic requirement for every candidate for our scientific editing vacancies, and some members of our editing team hold PhDs and have extensive teaching and examining experience. An understanding of the referencing styles such as AMA, APA and Vancouver that are commonly used in scientific papers and reports is absolutely essential, and a familiarity with the formal prose style as well as the standard structures and contents of publishable scientific documents is also expected.

Our clients send us their writing electronically, most often as Word documents, so applicants for our scientific editing vacancies need to work accurately and efficiently in Microsoft Word. This includes knowing how to use Word’s Track Changes and Comment functions, as these features allow us to inform our clients about what has been changed in their documents and why. Some scientists submit their writing in LaTeX files, so experience working with that program is also an asset.

Finally, successful scientific editors tend to have a penchant for precision and perfectionism as well as a keen eye for detail and consistency. They respect the research and writing of clients, understand the importance of confidentiality and recognise that meeting the deadlines requested by customers is always essential. We therefore seek and foster these qualities in all candidates for our scientific editing vacancies.
