Academic Proofreading Vacancies

Part- and Full-Time

We are an English language support service for senior academics in all academic areas, including engineering, medicine, physical and biological sciences, social sciences, economics, law, management and the humanities. We offer academic proofreading vacancies to candidates with knowledge and experience in one or more of these fields of study.

Vacancy Description

Remote – Part-Time or Full-Time Position

We currently have academic proofreading vacancies available for experienced proofreaders to proofread scholarly articles submitted to academic journals.

The academic proofreading vacancies offered are perfect for those who would like to work from home to earn or supplement an income. With a computer, an internet connection and an advanced degree, proofreaders can work as many or as few hours a week as they wish. Parents who have spare time available for proofreading despite the demands of childcare, part-time university lecturers who are keen to read new research while funding their own, retired academics who are eager to keep up with the most recent developments in their fields and many others will find these positions highly desirable.

Remuneration

The rates of pay start at £6 ($8.50 USD) per 1,000 words, and a FREE academic proofreading course is provided.

All transactions between PRS and academic proofreaders are carried out electronically via email: PRS sends the proofreader an article (usually in Microsoft Word) via email, and the academic proofreader returns the proofread version in the same manner within a set amount of time.

Qualifications

All of our academic proofreaders are native speakers of English from the British Isles, Canada, the United States and Australia. Our clientele, on the other hand, is international. Although these academics report and publish their research in English, for many it is not their first language and they count on us to ensure that their writing communicates that research to readers with precision and clarity. All candidates for our academic proofreading vacancies must therefore be extremely proficient in the English language.

All of our academic proofreaders also hold a master’s or PhD degree in their respective fields of study. This is a necessary requirement for our academic proofreading vacancies because experience working with the formats and techniques of referencing systems such as APA, AMA, MLA, Chicago, Vancouver, Harvard and others is essential. In addition, a familiarity with scholarly discourse and the formal styles and structures of journal articles and other academic documents is important for effective proofreading. Teaching and examining experience can be helpful as well.

Our clients send us their writing as electronic documents and all proofreading is conducted via computer using these files. Microsoft Word is the most common choice among our customers, so a working understanding of Word and its Track Changes and Comment functions is indispensible for all proofreaders who apply for our academic proofreading vacancies. Experience with LaTeX can also be beneficial, as some academics and scientists use this program instead.

There is simply no substitute for perfectionism and attention to detail when proofreading academic documents, so those are qualities we seek in the candidates for our academic proofreading vacancies. Respect for the writing and ideas of our clients, a confidential approach to unpublished research and an ability to meet deadlines with excellent work are also essential qualifications.
