Remote – Part-Time or Full-Time Position

We currently have copy editing vacancies available for experienced editors to edit scholarly articles submitted to academic and scientific journals.

The copy editing vacancies available offer academics and scientists an excellent opportunity to put their skills to productive use from the comfort of their own homes. We assign documents to our editors on the basis of specialisation and availability, and our editors then work on their own computers to enter corrections and ultimately return the files to us by a pre-arranged deadline. Our editors choose how many hours they work each week, making these positions extremely flexible and well suited to part-time instructors who need extra income, retired scholars who want to earn a little money while staying informed about the latest developments in their fields, and stay-at-home parents who snatch all the time they can for reading and thinking between childcare activities.

Remuneration

The rates of pay start at £6 ($8.50 USD) per 1,000 words, and a FREE copy editing course is provided.

All transactions between PRS and copy editors are carried out electronically via email: PRS sends the editor an article (usually in Microsoft Word) via email, and the copy editor returns the edited version in the same manner within a set amount of time.

Qualifications

Excellent English language skills are an absolute necessity for all applicants for our copy editing vacancies. Since many members of our international clientele are non-native speakers of English who nonetheless wish or need to publish and present their research in English, they rely on the expertise of copy editors to check and perfect their writing. For this reason, all our copy editors are native speakers of English who are also highly proficient in the structures and rules of the language.

Applicants for our copy editing vacancies must have earned at least a master’s degree in their area of specialisation, and we are always eager to add PhD holders to our editing team. Our copy editors are expected to understand the techniques and formats of a wide variety of academic and scientific referencing methods, and they must also be familiar with the formal written styles of academic and scientific papers, books, reports and other documents. In many cases they have experience teaching and examining students as well.

The computer resources and skills required for our copy editing vacancies are basic. Research papers and other files are assigned by email to team members and then returned carefully edited by the same means, so an internet connection is vital. Most copy editing is done on Word documents, and we expect our editors to have a sound knowledge of that program, including its Track Changes and Comment functions. Occasionally our clients submit LaTeX documents, so experience with that program is an asset as well.

Among the most important qualifications a candidate applying for the copy editing vacancies can possess are a persistent drive for perfection and a keen eye for detail. In addition, our clients’ research and writing must always be respected and held in the strictest confidence by our editors, and the deadlines those clients set must also be observed and met, so careful planning and organisation are indispensible.
